Character Creation Challenge - 4: Nil Poss [Mutant: Hindenburg]
First Mutant: Year Zero character
I was sure I had made a MYZ system character one of the last two years, but doesn't seem like that's the case. So high time to remedy that!
0: The Fundamentals
I have GMed lots of Mutant: Year Zero, and played a few sessions too. My go to archtype is some kind of healy character that is also strong. I can't remember before starting the character generation how similiar this Hindenburg is to the base game as it's been years since I read it, but I'll reach for that.
1: Class
Mutated Animal (Pig).
2: Occupation
Doctor.
Well that made things simple.
3: Name
Nil Poss. Just took one of the suggest named from the list under occupation.
4: Age
Middle Aged. Happy medium of ability points and skill points.
5: Abilities
Immediate problem. The skill that uses healing (Vårda in Swedish) uses Känsla/Empathy, while the Doctor occupation wants Skärpa/Wits. And I want some Styrka/Strength. Not that bothered about Kyla/Agility. With 14 points this is actually hard to choose. Going forward, I will use the swedish words instead of making half assed translations I think... :)
- Styrka: 4
- Kyla: 2
- Skärpa: 4
- Känsla: 4
Not terribly exciting, and sorta wish I had gone young instead so I wouldn't have to dump Kyla.
6: Skills
Being middle ages gives me 10 points of färdigheter. Being a doctor allows me to start with up to 3 in Begripa, Speja and Vårda. The rest I have a maximum of 1 in.
- Slita & Släpa: 1
- Slåss: 1
- Uthärda: 0
- Hoppa & klättra: 0
- Skjuta: 0
- Smyga: 0
- Begripa: 2
- Mecka: 0
- Speja: 2
- Genomskåda: 0
- Manipulera: 1
- Vårda: 3
Not entirely sure what I think about this "new" YZE way of getting skills, where it's just this one list that you can start with just 1 in things that is not tied to the occupation. Liked the special skill in the first Mutant: Year Zero game better.
Either way, can heal well, know a few things and not be hopeless in a brawl, so the general jist of the archtype is good. It's just that Genlab and some other YZE games made it easier to be exactly what I wanted.
7: Talents
- Anatomi
The two other class talents are more useful I think. But as my Vårda is my only good skill adding something to the melee attacks even if a bit clunky seems more interesting.
8: Special Power(s)
This was pretty tough as all the Pig powers have something going for them. In the end I went for a bit more characterful:
- Lurvig
- Grävare
Grävare has consistently been useful when I GM, both for getting places and running away. Lurvig is not as powerful as for example Rovattack for the sheer oomph, but being able to avoid some damage and just saying no to cold checks the few times they show up for give me peace of mind.
9: Close Companion
Not applicable since the character is made in isolation.
10: Gear and Credits
- Scalpel
- 2 Credits
Was thinking about buying armor, but rolling 2 credits means having to be frugal at the start of the game.
11: Looks and Haven
Old and worn tux, with badly done fixing in place for clothes. A bit on the lean side for a pig. Warm smiles and cold frowns.
Haven is a very spartan apartment in Hydran. Almost never there, just to sleep and very little stuff there to entertain guests, cook food or store much. Like if you bought an apartment during student days, put in a mattress and promptly forgot to do anything for furniture the next 15 years.
12: Reputation
Middle aged, so starts at 1.

In Play
For some reason I'm getting some form of Jack the Ripper pig, or experimentation pig out of this character creation. Scalpel, anatomy and well dressed. Be very warm towards patients, the other characters and people he works for. Be a bit mean when dealing with others, or bumping into ramdom people at night.
Opinion
The Mutant character generation is still fairly nice and fast. But the rules balancing has hit too hard some places, and the loss of all the npc relations makes the character a bit more shallow than the previous Mutant: Year Zero products.
I would still play this character, but not sure it would win out against other types given how the healer occupation works in this variant.
