Character Creation Challenge 2024 - 26: Khulood [Coriolis]
First Coriolis character
Third Year Zero Engine game... I have an addiction. This is also a science fiction game like Alien, but has it's own ways of doing stuff.
A bit wiser after forgetting that Alien didn't use damage from pushing, I also read up on some rules from Coriolis. There is no ability damage from pushing here either, and no general ability damage from attacks - but rather physical and mental health trackers. So having a 2 in something is not that bad in this game either.
As a thing one has to do in this game not related, you are supposed to make a group concept (that gives you a group talent, among other things) that gives you some tips on what to take as careers for your characters. I am not going to go through the group decision hoops, but as a general concept the party will be an exploration/colonist group.
After the challenge is done, I am thinking maybe play around with all these group things that games has. Like for example work out this group concept thing and make a ship. Would be a bit interesting...
As a side note, I have the game in swedish, so will use that language for terms (with some norwegianification, since a lot of them are artsy expressions I cannot easily translate without things getting confusing.
1. Choose background
Förstkomna, Zalos, Legofolk.
Talk about having it rough...
2. Choose concept
Rymling - Mystiker
3. Calculate Anseende
0. 2 for being Legofolk, -2 for Rymling.
Should be a revolutionary...
4. Choose name and appearance
Name: Khulood.
I was sure the game had name tables, but it might be in some other book. Or I am just blind looking through the rules book...
Appearance: Empty eyes, jacket with many pockets
5. Allocate points to Grundegenskaper
- Styrka: 3
- Kyla: 4
- Skärpa: 3
- Känsla: 5
Having 15 points does so much for the attributes. Or rather, for having a secondary function without having to dump something.
6. Calculate Kroppspoeng and Stresspoeng
Kroppspoeng: 7
Stresspoeng: 8
7. Allocate points to Ferdigheter
Allmenne
- Kraftprov
- Manipulera (2)
- Närkamp
- Rörlighet (1)
- Skjutvapen (1)
- Smyga (1)
- Spaning
- Överlevnad
Kvalifiserede
- Befäl
- Datadjinn
- Horisontens kultur
- Medikurgi
- Mystiska krafter (3)
- Pilot
- Teknologi
- Vetenskap
Having just 8 skill points hurts a bit.
8. Choose talents
Class: Mystisk Kraft - Intuition
Icon: Krämaren
9. Get your Icon and Icon talent
Krämaren.
10. Choose personal problem
You are hunted by fanatics of the faith of the Icons. They know about your powers.
11. Choose relations to other player characters
None to pick.
12. Choose equipment
- Tagg med 500 extra birr
- Komlänk IV
- Vulkankarbin
- Skalexo
- Transaktor med fälsk identitet
- Bakgrunnskapital: 500 birr
13. Choose crew position
Skytt.
Hadn't considered crew positions at all when creating the character. Might be better for the group if the character picked up Befäl fast to take over being the captain, or just be the captain from the start if there is a better shot and nobody has Befäl anyway.

Opinions
While Coriolis has always been the YZE game I've wanted to play the most, my players tried it a bit back when it came out, and got a bit burned by all the extra added system bits. While the more simple YZE games they liked, like Vaesen. And I kinda get it.
While I like that they changed the Medic skill to be int-based and the Culture skill to be emp-based, that's about it for changes I liked.
Having a bunch of skills you need to have a point in is a departure from every other YZE game I know of. Having 4 out of 5 Ship-skills be on that list too makes it even more annoying to make characters keeping ship in mind as you can't even roll the skill without having it. The usual sci fi fanfare of items is taken too far as well, not to mention the ship adding an extra bit of clunk on top. The Dark Points system also makes things yanky as it's a group thing, and the GM needs to mind how to spend them a lot.
The Rules book is also a bit shoddy when it comes to editing. Lots of references without an actual page. Multiple instances of listing crew roles with references to a chapter, and the skills they use are then further hidden in the role action list that you have to dig for, instead of adding it to either of the lists that has the roles.
Bit surprising that for once a character creation made me cool down on wanting to play the game, but here we are. I would still like to play Coriolis, but might want use Traveller or something else as a system.
